Woodrow Wilson
Woodrow Wilson was elected March 4,1913 a few months before the war started. When it first began he wanted to keep peace and stay out of the war. He thought that Europeans needed to learn how to live peacefully with one another and thought this was going to help. So President Wilson kept trying to help bring peace between them but failed. The republicans led by Theodore Rossevelt felt that he need to start building up the american army in case of war. But he denied this because of wanting to stay in the countries neutral state.
President Wilson was able to maintain this until 1917 right after the Germany destroy a British ship that had american citizens on it. In his speech to declare war Wilson said, " This is the war to end all wars." Meaning he wanted to build a basis for peace that would prevent future catastrophic wars and needless death and destruction.
